Adam Venture, a young explorer, studies relics brought back by the Crusaders from the Holy Land in an old Templar Church in Luz, France. He finds the memoirs written by Charles L'Heureux - a knight that fought in the Third Crusade alongside Richard the Lionheart. Charles L'Heureux was given an ancient scroll by the knight during his travels of 1191. After he had understood the meaning of the scroll, he requested permission to leave his regiment, which was heading for Jerusalem. He then traveled East alone. The memoirs point Adam towards the scroll hidden in a grave beneath the church. The scroll contains ancient symbols. The scroll mentions a labyrinthine network of caves and grottoes guarding the headwaters for four rivers, namely: Pishon (Gihon), Tigris (Euphrates), and Euphrates.
