Professor Samuel Hunt of the British Museum travels the globe searching for ancient games mastered only by certain families, treasured as mystic treasures by these families and forgotten from modern society. On arrival he finds an old acquaintance's daughter desperately in need of assistance; in love with a swordsmith jailed on false allegations for theft of valuable sword. Soon afterwards Professor Hunt becomes aware of hidden activities taking place behind closed doors- family revenge, black magic, bet-lost bet or dishonest intrigue? Whatever its source he must find the sword and reveal truthful answers before fulfilling his mission and finding sword will complete it.
